Kari Tauring

Kari Tauring is a Minneapolis-based Nordic folk musician, dancer, and storyteller. A völva in Old Norse, she “carries the staff” of spiritual tradition within her Nordic ancestry through performance,
education, and authorship.

Kari grew up in a Norwegian-centric family in Minnesota with
summers spent with extended family in Wisconsin. She combines deep scholarship and personal practice to create new
interpretations of what it means to be Nordic. Called “innovative folk” music, Tauring gives modern relevance to the ancient poems and songs that inspire her. She has several recordings available.

Völva Stav is her original spiritual practice of aligning the body and its processes with the world tree and its many inhabitants. The use of staff rhythm for journey and rune expression, the dovetailing of rune postures within Nordic movement, and her boundary-setting and communication tools with Nordic roots are unique, profound, and well received around the world.

The “Völva Stav Manual” (2010) was one of her first publications and is a mainstay of students across the globe.

Kari began studying Runes and ancient texts about them in 1989. Putting rune postures to traditional Scandinavian folk dances sparked her programs in Nordic Roots Dance. A 2011 grantee of the Minnesota State Arts Board, her unique programs continue throughout the United States.

“The Runes: A Deeper Journey” (2016) has an accompanying app for iPhone.

Her poetry book, “The Day Begins At Sunset” (2023) comes out of these Nordic studies and practices around the primstav calendar. Written just before, during, and after the global pandemic and political uprisings in Minneapolis, the poems chronicle the arc of spiritual expression and process during these unsettling times.

Along with the primstav and poetry, the Younger Futhark runes surfaced as anchors for reflection and healers in their embodiment. We can look forward to her upcoming work, “Younger Futhark: a Pandemic Journey” in 2024!
